UB Sweeps Dual Meets

BUFFALO, NY- The UB wrestling team won a pair of dual meets Saturday afternoon, including their first ever Mid-American Conference victory, defeating Kent State 22-17 and fefeating Syracuse Unviersity 36-1.

UB trailed the Golden Flashes 15-0 after the first four weight classes and was down 18-4 with four matches remaining in the meet. Jacob Schaus (Falconer, NY/Falconer) rallied the team with a win by fall over Bert Dobies at the 2:35 mark. The big momentum swing for the Bulls came in the 184-pound weight class. Senior Matt Ricci (E. Rochester, NY/E. Rochester) fought a tough match and prevailed with a win by fall. Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero) then closed out the last two matches with decision victories as the Bulls prevailed 22-17.

In the second match of the afternoon, the Bulls defeated visiting Syracuse University 36-1. Matt Ricci recorded his second victory by fall of the day, pinning Shawn Thomas at the 5:34 mark. Other double winners on the day for UB included Jake Partlow (Quaker City, OH/Shenandoah) at 157 pounds, Jacob Schaus at 174-pounds, Josh States at 197-pounds and John Eschenfelder at the heavyweight division.

In a non-conference match during the afternoon session, Kent State also defeated Syracuse University 34-7.

The Bulls will travel to face Miami-Ohio and Eastern Illinois tomorrow afternoon in Oxford, OH. UB will be in action at home again on Wednesday, Feb. 3, when they face MAC foe Eastern Michigan.
