UB Wrestling Fourth at MAC ChampionshipsDeKALB, ILL. - The University at Buffalo wrestling team placed fourth at the MAC Championships this weeked. The Bulls finished with 55.5 points while conference champion Central Michigan finished with 124.5.
John Eschenfelder (Syracuse, NY/Cicero) took the championship in the heavyweight division. Eschenfelder went 3-0 i nteh tournament, winning his first match by fall. He then defeated Neal Harvey from Ohio for first place in a 3-2 decision.
The Bulls had a couple of wrestlers take second place. Freshman Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) took second place at 165-pounds. Cooper defeated Jack Hageman of Kent 9-5 to take second palce. In addition, Cooper was awarded for his outstanding accomplishments be being named MAC co-Freshman-of-the-Year along with Scott Owen of Northern Illinois.
Brain Schaal (Attica, NY/Alexander) took second at 125 pounds. His lone loss came in the championship match against Kent's Brian Thompson. Second-seeded Schaal lost 9-7 in overtime to the MAC's top ranked wrestler at that weight class.
Jacob Schaus (Falconer, NY/Falconer) also placed second in one of the toughest weight classes in the MAC. Schaus defeated Mike Feeney of Eastern Michigan, one of two MAC wrestlers to defeat him this season, to advance to the championship match. In that match, Schaus lost a close 4-2 decision to Ryan Cunningham of Central Michigan who is currently ranked in the top-10 nationally in that weight class. |
