Four Bulls Take Individual Titles at UB Open

Eleven Bulls place at the non-scoring event that featured 19 schools at Alumni Arena

BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore Patrick Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) (149 pounds) and junior Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) (184 pounds) took titles for the University at Buffalo wrestling team to lead the squad as 11 Buffalo grapplers placed at Thursday's Second Annual UB Open in Alumni Arena.

Redshirt seniors Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) (197 pounds) and Greg Thomas (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale/Nassau CC) (285 pounds) also took individual titles wrestling unattached.

Cerminara breezed to the finals with a pin against Morrisville's Alen Wheeler and a 10-2 win against Ohio's Nick Terbay. In the finals, the 2004 All-American won a hard-fought 5-3 decision against Penn State's Joel Edwards. Cerminara is 6-0 this year while wrestling unattached, having also taken the title at the Niagara Open.

Thomas took the heavyweight division, scoring a pin against Aaron Haak and then garnering decisions against Army's Nathan Thobaben and Ithaca's Brian Petti. The former Junior College All-American took the title with a 7-4 win over Penn State's CJ Wonnsettler.

Lloyd scored a technical win over fellow UB teammate freshman Gus Manzur (Cheektowaga, NY/Oakton), who was wrestling unattached in the first round. Lloyd then beat Niagara County Community College's Larry Aceti, 6-3, in the semifinals and Ohio University's Aaron Gomoll, 6-0, in the finals to claim the title.

Hicks claimed the title with pins in his first two matches before beating The Citadel's John Dickerson, 9-3 in the semifinals and Central Michigan's Vince Didona, 6-0, in the finals.

Sophomore Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) (133 pounds) took second-place, losing in the finals to Penn State's Jake Strayer, 7-4, after collecting a pin and a 5-1 decision in his first two matches.

Senior Cliff Smith (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) (141 pounds) also took second at the meet, falling to Ohio's Albert Madsen, 12-2 in the finals. Smith beat Gardner-Webb's Chas Franz, 12-3, Ohio's Jim Fowler, 8-5, and Sal Lasceri, 12-2, to reach the finals.

Freshman Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) (165 pounds) after a 2-2 day that featured a 7-2 win over sophomore Jake Blowers (Johnstown, NY/Broadalbin-Perth), wrestling unattached. Blowers picked up a pin in the fifth place match to secure one of the Bulls' four fifth-place finishes.

Freshman Nate Rock (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata) (174 pounds), junior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) (197 pounds) and sophomore Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) (285 pounds) each also landed fifth-place finishes.

Buffalo's next action is on Saturday as it will travel to Columbus, OH for the Buckeye Duals at Ohio State. The dual meets start at 11 a.m. and Buffalo will face Tennessee-Chattanooga, Clarion, Northwestern and Northern Illinois at the event.
