BUFFALO, NY - After taking a week off, the University at Buffalo earned its school-record fifth Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week award of the season, as junior John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore/Nassau CC) earned his first weekly honor of his NCAA career, the league office in Cleveland announced Tuesday.

Cummings, a transfer from Nassau Community College where he was a two-time JuCo All-American, posted two pins to help propel the Bulls to dual meet victories against Appalachian State and Mercyhurst on Tuesday. In the first match, Cummings pinned Ken Kepley with 29 seconds left in the first period. In the match against Mercyhurst’s Will Tedder, ranked third in Division II, Cummings fell behind 2-0, but came back by earning two takedowns and an escape to take a 5-2 lead before putting Tedder on his back with five seconds left.

Cummings is 11-10 on the season. He also took sixth at the Oklahoma Gold Classic on Nov. 12 to place in his first NCAA tournament.

This is the seventh week in a row a UB athlete has earned Player of the Week honors, as sophomore Heather Turner (West Seneca, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) earned women's basketball honors on Dec. 19. Before that, the wrestling team rolled off four straight weekly honors, with Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) winning the award on Dec. 13 after beating the nation's top 133-pound wrestler, Shawn Bunch of Edinboro. Senior Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) won back-to-back honors on Dec. 6 and Nov. 30 after winning the Las Vegas Invitational and the Mat Town USA Invitational. Sophomore Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) won the award on Nov. 22 after winning all three matches at a quad-meet, posting two falls and a major decision at the meet. The football team had two honorees the week of Nov. 14, as senior Rob Schroeder (East Rochester, NY/East Rochester) and junior Jared Patterson (Belvidere, NJ/Belvidere) earned MAC East Division Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week awards.

UB returns to the mat on Friday as it hosts the third annual UB Open at 10:00 am.
