Hicks, Budd Win 50th Career Matches in Tri-Meet Sweep
BUFFALO, NY - Senior Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) and junior Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) each earned their 50th career victories and senior Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) won his 120th as Buffalo posted two dual meet victories in a tri-meet Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Arena. Buffalo (5-1 overall) won 19 of its 20 matches, as it recorded its second shutout of the season with a 35-0 win against Appalachian State and then posted a convincing 34-3 win against Division II's 12th-ranked Mercyhurst. The Bulls opened its day with a 35-0 shutout of the Southern Conference's Appalachian State (2-3-1 overall), as junior John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (157 pounds) led the way by earning the only fall of the match. Freshman Louie Rubin (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) (125) snapped a five-match losing streak by posting a 13-5 major decision against Adam Wilson, as he added a takedown with four seconds left to earn four team points for the Bulls.
Terreyl Williams gave Budd (133), ranked 19th in the latest NWCA/InterMat/NWMA poll, as they wrestled to a 3-3 tie through regulation. After a scoreless first overtime, Budd chose the down position and earned an escape and a takedown to take control. He earned a 6-5 decision to win his 20th win of the season and 50th of his career. Sophomore Dana Gingerich (Spring Grove, PA/DeLone Catholic) (141) fell behind Brian Pogel, 3-0 thanks to riding time, but Gingerich came out with a seven-point flurry in the final two minutes, coupling an escape, two takedowns and a two-point near fall to take a 7-4 decision. Junior Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) (149) beat Nick Lukachs to extend Buffalo's lead to 13-0 with a 5-3 decision. Cummings (157) followed with a pin to extend the lead to 19-0, as he earned the fall against Ken Kepley at the 2:31 mark. Sophomore Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) (165) posted a 3-1 win against William Houghton to extend the lead to 22-0.Sophomore Mike Ragusa (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) (174) clinched the meet with a 3-1 win against Neal Martin as he won his 15th match of the season. Hicks (184) posted four team points on the strength of an 11-0 decision against Aaron Barnette for his 50th career win. Cerminara (197) once again dominated en route to his 21st straight victory, posting seven takedowns in a 17-4 major decision against Josh Carroll. In the final match of the meet, senior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) (heavyweight) fell behind as David Hazell earned a reversal in the second period. However, Sherrell countered with a reversal and a three-point near fall as time expired in the period to clinch the Bulls' second shutout of the season with an 8-2 win. In the second meet, after the Lakers (4-5 overall) won the first match at 125 pounds, but Budd tied the meet for the Bulls with an 8-3 win against Lenny Calhoun at 133, setting off nine straight Bulls wins. Gingerich responded to a third period three-point flurry by J.J. Zanetta with a reversal to seal a 14-6 major decision. Lloyd posted a 6-2 win against Brian Pogel to give Buffalo a 10-3 lead.
Cummings once again delivered the big blow, posting a fall with five seconds left in his match with Will Tedder, ranked third in Division II. After falling behind 2-0 in the first period, Cummings worked back into the match by earning two takedowns. He finally got Tedder on his back and worked for the pin as time neared expiration. Moran followed with a defeat of Division II's third-ranked Zach Schaefer at 165 pounds, winning 5-3 for his 19th win of the season, giving Buffalo a 19-3 lead. Ragusa posted a 6-2 over Hudson Harrison for his 16th win at 174 pounds. Hicks followed with a major decision, posting an 11-3 win against Trevor Gallo. Cerminara posted his 22nd straight win with an 8-2 win against Paul Bergman. Cerminara is just two wins shy of John Stutzman's (1995-96) school record of 24 straight wins. Sherrell finished off the meet with a 17-0 technical fall of Nick Marcellino, posting five three-point near falls in the first period to seal the win. In the first meet of the day, Mercyhurst handled Appalachian State, 23-13, for its third win against a Division I opponent in two weeks, having also beaten East Stroudsburg and Delaware State. Buffalo returns to the mats after the holiday with the Third Annual UB Open on Dec. 30 with action starting at 10:00 am.
