Weeklly Release 12/20

Current record - 3-0 (0-0 Mid-American Conference)

Athlete of the Week

Sophomore Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) went 3-0 during a quad meet on Dec. 18th vs. Appalachian State, Binghamton and Drexel.

He defeated Appalachian State's Mark Fee, 6-4, pinned Binghamton's Miguel Phillips in :47 and then defeated Drexel's Dave Dietrich -ranked #14 by InterMat Magazine -by a 5-3 score in the Bulls' impressive win over Drexel.

Bulls Start Slow; Finish Strong In Sweep

The Bulls started out somewhat sluggishly in a quadrangular meet at home on Saturday but turned up the heat as the day went on, capping the afternoon with a convincing 31-6 drubbing of Drexel, a former rival in the East Coast Wrestling Association.

Buffalo began the day with a 28-15 win over Appalachian State, a match they trailed 15-6 halfway through the bouts. However, Ryan Bentley (149 pounds) scored a pin at 1:18 over Andy Putnam and UB went on to reel off five straight victories to win, 28-15.

The Bulls then dominated Binghamton, 45-0, as Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and Jake Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah) recorded technical falls, while Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) notched falls.

The Bulls kept the momentum going by burying Drexel, 31-6, as Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) scored a key win at 125 and Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) followed with a pin at 133 pounds to turn the momentum in UB's favor.

Five Bulls Unbeaten In Three Victories

Five University at Buffalo wrestlers swept all three of their matches as the Bulls posted three impressive victories over Appalachian State, Binghamton and Drexel in a four-team battle at Alumni Arena on Saturday.

Leading the charge for the Bulls was senior Jacob Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah) who had three wins at 157 pounds, including one by fall and one by technical fall. Senior heavyweight Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) also won three times, once by pin and twice by decision. Other triple winners for UB were Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) and Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen Central) and junior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport). States ended the Drexel victory with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Pat Miller.

Both Gary and Ben Cooper as well as Josh States improved to 8-3 with their wins while Jake Partlow improved to 7-3.

Bulls Change Plans, Head To Wilkes

The Bulls have changed their tournament plans after Christmas. Originally, UB was to participate in the Sunshine Open, but instead will head to the Wilkes Open for the second straight year. Last year, UB's Josh States finished third at 197 pounds but no team scoring was kept.

UB Faces Tough National Competition

The Bulls wrestling program continues its tradition of wrestling the finest competition in the nation. In upcoming matches, they will face some of the best wrestling talent in the country as Buffalo will meet Cornell (2/17), Edinboro (1/16), and MAC opponent Central Michigan (2/12), who are all top-25 ranked Division I wrestling programs according to InterMat's wrestling rankings. The Bulls have already faced wrestlers from Bloomsburg and Oregon State, both InterMat honorable mention recipient teams. In addition, UB will go up against Pittsburgh-Johnstown (1/8), the defending Division II National Champions.
