Bulls Sweep Wrestling Quad Meet

Buffalo defeats Drexel, Appalachian State and Binghamton to begin season 3-0

BUFFALO, NY - Five University at Buffalo wrestlers swept all three of their matches as the Bulls began their dual match season with three impressive victories over Appalachian State, Binghamton and Drexel in a four-team battle at Alumni Arena on Saturday.

The Bulls handed Drexel their only loss with a dominating 31-6 victory and also defeated Appalachian State, 28-15, and Binghamton, 45-0. Drexel defeated Appalachian State, 27-10 and Binghamton, 37-6; while Appalachian State upended Binghamton, 27-16.

Leading the charge for the Bulls was senior Jacob Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah) who had three wins at 157 pounds, including one by fall and one by technical fall. Senior heavyweight Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) also won three times, once by pin and twice by decision. Other triple winners for UB were Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) and Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen Central) and junior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport). States ended the Drexel victory with a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over Pat Miller.

Both Gary and Ben Cooper improved to 8-3 with their wins while Josh States improved to 5-1 and Jake Partlow improved to 7-3.

The Bulls used pins from Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley), Ben Cooper and Garofalo to beat Appalachian State in the opener. Buffalo rebounded from a 15-6 deficit by winning the last five matches, including the match-clinching pin from Ben Cooper. Buffalo dominated Binghamton, 45-0, as Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) and Gary Cooper earned falls.

In the final match of the day, the Bulls turned what was expected to be a close match into a rout by winning the final four matches after leading just 16-6 after six matches. Sophomore Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) had a clutch 4-1 win at 125 pounds before Kegel pinned Justin Gottwald to turn the momentum in the Bulls'favor.

Buffalo is now off until Dec. 29 when they travel to Florida for the Sunshine Open.
