Gibbs Resigns Wrestling Position

Has assisted head coach Jim Beichner for the last seven-plus seasons

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo assistant wrestling coach Sean Gibbs has resigned his position on head coach Jim Beichner's staff to accept a job with a nationally-known pharmaceutical company.

Gibbs has been at UB for the past seven-plus years - coming to Buffalo with Beichner - and has helped the Bulls' program grow into a nationally-recognized program that has sent 17 wrestlers to the NCAA Division I Championships over that time.

"There is never a good time to lose an assistant coach, particularly one who has been so dedicated to his job like Sean has been," said Beichner. "It's been a real pleasure for me to have worked with Sean and to have seen his growth as a coach and a person. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors. We will move as quickly as we can to find a qualified replacement."

Before joining the Bulls at the beginning of the 1995-1996 season, Gibbs wrestled four years at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a two-time NCAA Division I National qualifier at 167 pounds and earned a pair of top three finishes in the 1992 and 1993 Eastern Wrestling League Tournaments.

Gibbs has been part of the National Wrestling Coaches Association's All-American Tour which took a group of 16 wrestlers overseas to wrestle in Bulgaria and Paris, and has served as the key recruiter for the Bulls.

Gibbs and his wife Cynthia have two children - Caitlyn (4) and Graham (3).

"This is one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make in my life and is a decision solely based on what is best for my family," said Gibbs. "The seven-and-a-half years that I have been here have been marked by incredible change and growth in our wrestling program. I would like to think that I had a large part in that growth, but make no mistake, Coach Beichner has been the driving force and the man at the wheel. I am confident that this program will continue to rise in national prominence on a yearly basis.

"The young men in our program, both past and present, may never fully understand how much they have meant to me and I wish them and Coach Beichner nothing but the best as they continue their pursuit of excellence," Gibbs added.
