Bulls Complete Competition at Cliff Keen Invitational

Freshman Kyle Cerminara Leads the Way in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, NV - Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) came only one win away from placing in the top eight at 197 pounds in the Cliff Keen Invitational. He lost his opening match to Fresno State's Marcio Betelho, who was seeded 12th. Cerminara then strung together three victories - twice by technical fall and once by major decision. His run came to an end when Arizona State's eighth seeded Erik Gladish decisioned him, 7-3.

"It's very special when a true freshman places in the top 12 of a prestigious tournament," said UB head coach Jim Beichner. "Kyle is not far away from earning a national ranking at his weight class."

In the field of 53 teams, Buffalo finished 32nd. The only Bull to compete in the second day of competition was Cerminara.

Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) began the tourney with a major upset at 125 pounds. He defeated the sixth seeded Jose Leon from Boston University by a 10-4 decision. Voorhees, a senior, then lost his next two matches and was eliminated from competition.

Sophomore Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) won three of his five matches at 184 pounds. He won once by fall, once by technical fall, and once by major decision. His final loss to ninth seeded Travis Pascoe of Nebraska knocked him out of the tournament.

At 157 pounds, junior Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/Jefferson) won two of his four matches. He was seeded sixth, which earned him a first round bye. After being upset in his opening match, he won his next two matches - including a 13-8 decision over the ninth seeded Rob Maxwell of California Polytechnic. Oregon's Tony Overstake put Cooper out the tournament by decisioning him 12-5.

Also picking up a pair of wins were senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley). At 149 pounds, Jacoutot lost his opening match, but then won two straight before being knocked out. One of his victories came over David Dies, the eleventh seed from Brown. Bentley won his first match, and also won his first competition in the consolation bracket before he was eliminated.

Senior Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore), at 165 pounds, lost his first two matches of the season during the opening rounds. His overall mark now stands at 8-2. 133-pound wrestler Cliff Smith (Merrick, NY/Calhoun) and Bill Prince (Frewsburg, NY/Frewsburg) at 174 pounds were also both eliminated after a pair of early losses.

The Bulls' host their first dual meet of the season this upcoming week. Binghamton comes to Alumni Arena for a Wednesday December 5th meet that gets underway at 3 p.m. Buffalo currently has a 1-1 dual meet record.
