Bulls Top Eastern Michigan 25-8 Ron Majerus claim major
decision victory
BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team defeated Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan University this afternoon in front of a home crowd by the score of 25-8. Ron Majerus claimed a major decision in the Bulls' victory lifting them to a 5-1 start on the season and 1-0 record in the MAC standings. The Bulls opened the dual with a major decision loss as Taylor Golba fell behind Eastern Michigan's Jordan McGuire by the score of 10-2 in the second period. Golba fought hard but could not recover losing the dual, 13-5 with the Bulls behind 4-0. From that point forward, the Bulls caught fire with eight consecutive victories. In the 133-lb. weight class, Kevin Smith kept the Eagles' Chris Jenkins off the scoresheet with a 4-0 victory. In the 165-lb weight class, Majerus picked up a major decision over EMU's Justin Brandel. Majerus took a 4-1 lead in the first period over Brandel. In the second period, Majerus was able to extend his lead to 9-1 with a three-point near fall. In the end, Majerus was rewarded a riding time point leading to a 10-2 victory, giving the Bulls' a 16-4 lead midway through the match. At 174, Nate Rock kept EMU's Chris Eggert off the scoresheet with a 4-0 victory.
Jimmy Hamel followed Moran's decision with a close, hard fought match against EMU's John McClure in the 197-lb weight class. As a result of McClure's technical violation of fleeing the mat, Hamel took a 1-0 lead in the first period. Each wrestler scored in the following periods with Hamel coming out on top of McClure by the score of 2-1. The Bulls next match will be on Saturday, December 13th as they travel to Bloomsburg University to face East Stroudsburg University and Sacred Heart University.
