Buffalo Splits MAC Opener

Bulls knock off Eastern Michigan, but lose to Northern Illinois in season's opening dual meet

DeKALB, IL - The University at Buffalo wrestling team kicked off their dual meet season within the Mid-American Conference by defeating Eastern Michigan 33-6, and suffering a 22-13 loss at the hands of the Northern Illinois Huskies.

Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) won by fall at 141 pounds. Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 149 pounds, Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) at 157 pounds, Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) at 165 pounds, Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen/Brockport) at 174 pounds, Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) at 184 pounds, and Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) at 197 pounds each won their respective matches by decision. Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) won by forfeit at 125 pounds.

Four Bulls won their matches in the loss to the Huskies. Bentley, Jacoutot, and Guarino all won by decision. Guarino moved to a perfect 8-0 on the season. Cerminara registered a victory by major decision, picking up four team points for the Bulls.

Bontempo led the team with eight takedowns during the dual meet. Gary Cooper led the Bulls with a pair of two-point near falls, two three-point near falls, and eight escapes. Cerminara, Guarino, and Jacoutot each registered two reversals. Guarino and Smith picked up two riding time points, which led the squad.

UB now heads west to Las Vegas to participate in the Cliff Keen Invitational this Friday and Saturday. The tournament contains some of the best wrestlers and teams throughout the entire country.
