Hamel and Moran Win Titles at Mat Town Tournament

Five Bulls claim top four finishes at the non-scoring event

LOCK HAVEN, PA – Jimmy Hamel (Natick, MA/Natick) and Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) each won their respective weight classes at the Mat Town Tournament Saturday as the University at Buffalo wrestling team competed in the non-team scoring event. In addition to Hamel and Moran, three other Bulls also earned top four finishes.

Hamel earned his first career individual title by winning the 197 weight class at Mat Town. On his road to the final, Hamel first won a 17-7 decision over Josh White of Lock Haven and then a 13-3 decision over Raymond Bennett of Millersville. In the championship bout, Hamel defeated Nick Sommerfeld of Columbia, a top 20 ranked wrestler, to win the 197 pound division.

Moran won three matches for the day to claim the 184 pound title. In his opening bout, Moran defeated Jon Rothman of Hofstra by a 12-2 decision. In the semifinals, he dispatched of Columbia's Kenji Porter by an 8-3 decision. Moran won the championship at 184 pounds with a 8-6 decision victory over unattached wrestler Cam Simaz.

At 149 pounds, Dana Gingerich (Spring Grove, PA/Deleon Catholic) earned a third place finish for the Bulls. Gingerich fell in his first bout to Shane Smith of Millersville by fall, forcing him to battle his way back through the wrestlebacks. Gingerich earned five victories in wrestleback action to earn a place in the third-place bout at 149 pounds. In that match, the reigning MAC wrestler of the week earned a 10-5 decision victory over Ollie Cooperwood of Lock Haven to take third place.

In the 285 pound weight class, Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) earned a third place finish. Parker lost his first match to Maciej Jochem of Cornell in overtime 3-2. But Parker reeled off three victories to battle his way back into the third place match in the heavyweight division. In that match, Parker decisioned Cameron Wade of Penn State to earn third place honors.

Joe Wilson (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) finished fourth for the Bulls in the 133 pound weight class. Wilson fell in his first match to Matt Bonson of Virginia, but battled back to win his next two matches to reach the consolation final. Wilson shutout Jeff Rotella of Hofstra 4-0 and then shutout Paul Grogan of Rutgers by the same score. In the consolation final, Wilson fell to unattached wrestler Andrew Grabfelder 6-1.

The Bulls will travel to Las Vegas this coming weekend to compete in the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational. The two-day event will take place on Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1.
