Two Bulls Place at Slippery Rock Tourney

Rendos and Parker have strong showings wrestling unattached at National City event

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA - Sophomore Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) finished second in the heavyweight division and freshman Scott Rendos (Brockway, PA/Brockway) took third at 157 pounds to lead a contingent of eight University at Buffalo wrestlers at Saturday's National City Slippery Rock Open at Slippery Rock University.

Parker, a transfeer from Binghamton University, by defeating Brett Boggs of Findlay, 3-1, and then knocked out second-seeded Derek Ankney of John Carrol, 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Ankley is ranked fifth in Division III according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association released on Oct. 22.

Parker beat Juan Flores of Carson Newman, 2-1 in the quarters and Jon Neese of Pittsburgh-Johnstown, 3-2 to reach the finals where Rasheed Goff of Cleveland State beat Parker, 4-3. Parker raised his season record to 6-3 at the tournament.

Rendos started the tournament by pinning Matt Howrylak of West Liberty State before losing to Gerald Hill of Slippery Rock, 4-2, in overtime.

Dropping into the consolation bracket, Rendos reeled off five straight wins to take third place, as he downed Carson Newman's Daniel Payne, 10-0, for a major decision, then took out second-seeded Skyler Waddell of Gannon, 7-4. Rendos then scored a major decision against Mike Kemble of Theil, 9-0 to move into the consolation quarterfinals, where he beat Slippery Rock's Jake Zeoli, 3-2.

In the consolation semifinals, Rendos scored a 1-0 decision against Pittsburgh-Johnstown's Matt Roncolato, the sixth-ranked wrestler in Division II according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association of America. In the third-place match, Rendos beat Cory Mancuso of Slippery Rock, 3-2.

Six other UB wrestlers competed unattached at the meet, with 133-pound freshman John Payne (Queensbury, NY/Queesnbury) finishing 2-2.

Buffalo next hits the mats Saturday at the Mat Town USA Tournament at Lock Haven University. The tournament starts at 9:00 am.
