BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling program started its 2000-2001 season off with a bang, winning the Bloomsburg University Invitational with 179 points. This win marks the first time ever that the Bulls have won this tournament. UB (179 points) narrowly defeated host, Bloomsburg (175.5 points), who is ranked 23rd in the country by Amateur News Wrestling. Following Bloomsburg were Princeton, Millersville, VMI, Lycoming, Duke and Binghamton respectively. Point totals for 3rd through 8th place were unavailable.

En route to victory, a UB wrestler placed in the top 3 in every weight class. Claiming first in their respective weight class were Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/Mac Arthur HS), Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley HS), Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport HS) and John Eschenfelder (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse HS). Placing second in the tournament were Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich HS) and true freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami HS), who lost to Ed Hockenberry (Bloomsburg), later named the Most Outstanding Wrestler for the tournament.

Next up for the Bulls is a pair of home dual meets against Mid-American Conference opponents, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois on Sunday Nov. 26 at 12 pm.
