Buffalo Takes Bloomsburg Invitational

Bulls top field of seven to successfully defend tournament title

BLOOMSBURG, PA - The University at Buffalo wrestling team scored 139.5 team points, narrowly edging Virginia Military Institute to win the Bloomsburg Invitational. Other teams in the competition included Bloomsburg, Millersville, Lycoming, Duke, and Princeton. It was UB's second consecutive year winning the title at the Bloomsburg Invitational.

Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) at 197 pounds was one of five Bulls to win his respective weight class. Cerminara won three matches en route to his title, defeating Greg Enyon of Millersville by an 8-2 decision in the final. At the completion of the day's events, Cerminara was named Tournament Most Valuable Player.

At 184 pounds, Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) won by fall in the final against Lycoming's Jeff Tierney. Bontempo also won a pair of matches before advancing to the final.

The champion at the 165-pound weight class was Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore). After two wins, Guarino won a 2-0 decision over Matt Hoover of Duke in the final.

Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) won all three of his matches to take the 125-pound title. Voorhees defeated Bloomsburg's Brock Hite in the final.

There was an all-Buffalo final at 149 pounds, when both Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) both won their semifinal matches. Jacoutot won a 3-2 decision over Edwards.

Along with Edwards, three other Bulls also placed second in their weight classes. At 174 pounds, Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen/Brockport) lost to VMI's Matt Erwin in the final. Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) lost the 157-pound final to Adam Britt of VMI. Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) finished in second place at 141 pounds following a loss to VMI's Mark DiSalvo.

The next action for UB comes on Sunday November 25 from DeKalb, IL. The Bulls will open their Mid-American Conference schedule with a dual meet against MAC rivals Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.
