BUFFALO, NY - InterMat Wrestling, one of the nation's most accurate sources for collegiate wrestling information, has named the University at Buffalo to its honorable mention list for preseason NCAA Division I Rankings. InterMat ranked the Bulls in the top 34 in the nation. The Bulls were the only Mid-American Conference team named to InterMat's rankings. Defending NCAA champion Iowa was ranked first, followed by Minnesota, Iowa St., Oklahoma St. and Illinois. Other schools receiving honorable mention status include Bloomsburg, Cornell, Fresno St., Harvard, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Rider and West Virginia. This is the first time UB has been named to the magazine's preseason rankings.

InterMat's individual rankings were also released and two UB grapplers made the list. Senior John Eschenfelder (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse HS) was ranked sixth in the 285 pound weight class and sophomore Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich HS) was ranked 20th in the 197 pound weight class. Both wrestlers are previous NCAA qualifiers.

Also announced were the first MAC individual rankings. Eschenfelder (Hwt) and Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur HS) (133) were both ranked first in their respective weight classes. Seniors Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson HS) (165) and Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport HS) (184) and Downey (197) were all ranked second in their weight classes.
