Bulls Predicted To Finish Second In Preseason MAC PollBUFFALO After finishing fourth in last year's Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championship, the University at Buffalo has been predicted, by the league's head coaches, to finish in second place. The coaches named Kent State the favorite to win the league title. UB's 30 points were second to the Golden Flashes' 36 points, while Northern Illinois and Ohio tied for third with 29 points. Defending champion Central Michigan fell to fifth with 12 points, and Eastern Michigan was chosen to finish sixth with five points. Each team is awarded points based on the individual weight class preseason rankings. Five points were given for the top spot in each weight class, four for second-place, three for third-place, two for second-place and one for fifth-place. In the 1999-00 season, UB finished with an 11-5 dual meet record, the third time in five years that UB recorded double figure wins. UB was also 2-3 in the MAC and finished fourth in both the regular season and in the MAC Championships. Also, for the third straight year, UB sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Championships. Seniors Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur HS) (133 pounds) and Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport HS) (184 pounds) and sophomore Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich HS) (197 pounds) all placed second at the MAC Championships to qualify for the NCAA Championships. This season, UB returns 16 letterwinners from last season while only losing five. In addition, John Eschenfelder (North Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse HS), MAC Champion at heavyweight in 1999 but redshirted last season, returns for his senior season with the Bulls. In the MAC presesason poll, Eschenfelder was ranked at the top spot at heavyweight as was Kegel at 133 pounds. The 2001 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championship will be hosted by Ohio University from March 3-4 in Athens, Ohio.
