UB Wrestling to Host Coaches Clinic Featuring Special Guest Dan Gable Coached Iowa to 15 NCAA championships resulting
in 45 National Champions and 152 All-Americans
BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo head wrestling coach Jim Beichner announces the appearance of former Iowa head wrestling coach Dan Gable as a special guest clinician at the seventh UB Coaches Clinic on Thursday, October 22 from 4:30 pm until 9:30 pm at Alumni Arena. Regarded as one of the most dominant wrestlers and coaches in the history of collegiate wrestling, Gable will be making his first appearance in Western New York.
Following a successful career at Iowa State, Gable moved onto the world platform. Gable added titles at the 1971 Pan American Games, the 1972 Tbilisi Tournament and the 1971 World Championships to his resume. In 1972, he won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics without surrendering a point to any of his opponents. Following his gold-medal performance at the Summer Olympics in 1972, Gable joined the Iowa coaching staff as an assistant under Hall of Famer Gary Kurdelmeier before becoming head coach in 1976. In his coaching career at Iowa, he became the all-time winningest wrestling coach from 1977 to 1997, compiling a career record of 355-21-5. His list of coaching achievements includes 152 All-Americans, 45 National Champions, 106 Big Ten Champions and 12 Olympians. In his tenure, the Hawkeyes won 25 consecutive Big Ten championships, 21 coming under Gable as head coach and four while he was an assistant coach and administrator. He finished with a winning percentage of .932 including nine consecutive NCAA Championships from 1977 through 1986. Gable's success as an athlete and coach is a direct result of his dedication and ability to demand the very most out of himself and others. In Gable's eyes, wrestling "...helps young people develop important qualities such as self esteem, sportsmanship, work ethic and leadership skills. It also helps by instilling a competitive edge". The cost to attend the event is $100 including an entire coaching staff and student-athletes. "The goal is provide each Western New York wrestler the chance to experience one of the greatest athletes and coaches in wrestling history," explained Beichner.
