Smith is an exercise science major with aspirations of pursuing a career in physical therapy. He carries a 3.599 GPA through his second year of enrollment. In the 133-pound weight class, he compiled a 29-9 overall record while posting an exceptional dual meet record of 14-2. In tournament competition, he placed second at the UB Open and first at the 2009 New York State Intercollegiate Wrestling Championships.

At the conclusion of the season, Smith was selected to the Mid-American Conference 2009 Academic All-MAC Wrestling team for his outstanding performance on and off the mat as chosen by the league’s faculty athletic representatives.

“Kevin has a great work ethic, attitude and shows a great deal of determination toward his academic and athletic careers. We are very proud of his accomplishments thus far and look forward to even bigger and better things from him in the near future,” said head coach Jim Beichner.

To be named to the NWCA All-Academic Team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, been an NCAA qualifier or won 60 percent of his total schedule – and must have competed in at least 60 percent of said schedule. A wrestler may also qualify for the All-Academic team, if he obtains a 3.0 cumulative GPA and is a NCAA All-American.
