McKnight Eliminated From U.S. TrialsINDIANAPOLIS, IN - University at Buffalo freshman Mark McKnight (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) saw his Olympic dream end on Saturday when he lost for the second time at the United States Wrestling Olympic Trials at the RCA Dome.
McKnight dropped a 4-0 decision to Indiana assistant coach Mike Mena in the consolation bracket to be eliminated from the event. McKnight had lost a 4-0 decision to current Penn State assistant Tim Dernlan on Friday. Mena, the No. 5 seed and a former four-time NCAA All-American at Iowa, was able to oust McKnight, who saw an incredible first collegiate season come to an end. McKnight, one of the few collegians who earned an invite to the event, was the Mid-American Conference champion at 125 pounds, earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors and just missed earning All-American status at the Division I championships, finishing in the Top 12 in the nation as a true freshman. He finished the collegiate season with a 34-8 record. Mena would go on to lose to No. 3 seed Jeremy Hunter in the consolation semi-finals.
McKnight entered the event as the No. 11 seed after earning a trip with a 3-2 record at the U.S. National
Championships. |
