Wrestling Announces Award Winners

Cerminara, Bontempo and Ben Cooper honored

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team announced its 2001-02 team awards at UB's annual Athletic Awards Banquet, held at Samuel's Grande Manor on Sunday, April 28. Freshman Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter), who was also named UB's Male Athlete of the Year, was named Robert E. Rich Most Outstanding Wrestler as well as the Top Newcomer. Sophomore Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) was named Most Improved and senior Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen/Brockport) received the Coach's Award.

Cerminara had an outstanding freshman campaign that included a perfect 5-0 Mid-American Conference regular season record, the MAC Championship title at 197 pounds and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament where he went 1-2 and faced undefeated Cael Sanderson of Iowa State. Cerminara finished the year with a 26-13 record while also winning the 197-pound title at the Bloomsburg Invitational.

Bontempo posted a 28-10 overall record at the 184-pound weight class after going 12-10 at 174-pounds during his freshman season in 2000-01. He won the 184-pound title at the Bloomsburg Invitational and at the Wilkes Open, and he finished third at the MAC Championships. Bontempo also led the Bulls with 41 takedowns in dual meet competition in which he posted a 10-4 record.

Cooper finished his UB career with a 33-32 record after going 6-5 in 2001-02. He finished second at 174 pounds at the Bloomsburg Invitational.

The Bulls finished the 2001-02 season with a 6-10 overall record.
