Beichner, McKnight Given Awards

UB head coach and freshman wrestler honored by New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association

BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo wrestling head coach Jim Beichner and freshman 125-pounder Mark McKnight (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) each received awards from the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association on Thursday. Beichner was named Coach of the Year by the organization, while McKnight garnered Freshman of the Year honors.

Beichner, who has a career record of 88-50-2 as a head coach, also earned New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association Coach of the Year honors in 1996. During his nine seasons at UB, he has coached UB wrestlers into the NCAA Championships on 22 occasions. This year, he helped Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) to become the school's first-ever male Division I All-American.

McKnight finished the 2003-04 season with a 34-8 record, including a MAC Championship. He later advanced to the All-America Round of the NCAA Championships before being eliminated and was the only true freshman to advance that far within the 125-pound weight class.

Along with honoring Beichner and McKnight, the New York State Collegiate Wrestling Coaches Association also named Brockport's Artie Weidler as its Wrestler of the Year.
