ST. LOUIS, MO – After four consolation bracket wins, sophomore Mark McKnight’s (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) season came to an end in the same spot that it did last year, in the All-American Round of the NCAA Division I Championships. McKnight’s heartbreaking loss came to Indiana’s Joseph Dubuque last year and this year, it was Cal. State-Bakersfield’s Efren Ceballos, who had beaten McKnight twice this year, who earned the All-America nod rather than McKnight, winning 8-5 on Friday evening at the Savvis Center.

To become an All-American, you must finish in the top eight at the national championships. McKnight finishes in the top 12 for the second year in a row. Ceballos earned two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead and after earning an escape to take a four-point lead, McKnight earned a takedown, but Ceballos ended the second period by earning an escape and a takedown to take an 8-3 lead heading into the final period.

McKnight, who finishes the year 31-15 overall and 65-23 in his career, lost to second-seeded Nick Simmons of Michigan State in the first round on Friday, forcing him to fight through five consolation bracket matches to reach All-American status.

McKnight started his consolation bracket quest by beating Obe Blanc from Lock Haven, 7-5, before posting a 19-4 major decision against Duquesne's Jonathon Bittinger.

McKnight continued his consolation bracket quest for All-American status by earning his third straight win at the NCAA Championships, an 8-5 decision against Big 10 qualifer Grant Nakamura of Iowa State on Friday morning. Nakamura fell behind early, as McKnight scored two first period takedowns to control the match. McKnight then ensured a place in the Top 12 in the nation with a 5-3 win against UNC-Greensboro's Joe Kemmerer, earning a first period takedown and three escapes throughout the match to help stave off a third-period takedown from Kemmerer during his afternoon match.
