Budd Downed in Opening Round of NCAA Wrestling Championships

Both competitors, determined to advance into the second round, worked their way to a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period. Budd shot first at Hernandez a minute and a half into the match, but was unable to capitalize with a score. Hernandez elected the down position to start the second period and had a difficult time getting away from Budd until the 1:39 mark, scoring the escape and taking the lead. In the down position to start the third period, Budd fought tough but could not get away from the Indiana product, being held down for the entire period.

Budd came into the first round event having won 20 of his last 21 matches, including eight straight matches. He will next face Bobby Pfennigs of Oregon State in the consolation round later tonight, who he defeated, 8-4, in the pigtail preliminary round at last year's championships.
