Beichner Named to Clarion Hall of Fame

UB wrestling coach to be inducted by alma mater May 5

BUFFALO, NY - University at Buffalo wrestling coach Jim Beichner has been named as an inductee into the Clarion "Sports Hall of Fame" by his alma mater. Induction ceremonies are scheduled for May 5 at the Clarion University Chandler Dining Hall beginning at 7:00 pm.

The head coach of the UB wrestling program for the past five seasons, Beichner graduated from Clarion in 1987, winning four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference titles and compiling an overall record of 125-22 and a rare three undefeated dual meet seasons. He captained the Golden Eagles to an unbeaten 17-0-1 season in 1985-86 that included a victory over national powerhouse Oklahoma State and a third place national ranking. He was twice selected to wrestle in the prestigious East-West All-Star Classic.

A two-time NCAA Division I All-American, Beichner began his coaching career at his alma mater under fellow Clarion "Sports Hall of Fame" inductee Bob Bubb. In five seasons heading the Bulls, Beichner has compiled a 50-23-2 dual meet record including an 11-5 mark in 1999-2000. Three of his wrestlers Joe Downey, Shawn Kegel, and Josh States will represent UB in this weekend's NCAA Championships in St. Louis.

Beichner, a native of Cassadaga Valley, NY, is also a member of the Eastern Wrestling League and Cassadaga Halls of Fame. He was named 1995-96 New York State and East Coast Wrestling Association Coach of the Year and tabbed by Amateur Wrestling News as 1995-96 Rookie Head Coach of the Year.
