Cerminara Earns NCAA Berth

Five Bulls Place at MAC Championships, Team Finishes Fifth

YPSILANTI MI, -- Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) won the 197-pound weight class at the Mid-American Conference Championships, earning him an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in Albany beginning Thursday March 21st.

As a team, UB finished fifth out of the six MAC teams. They scored a total of 30.5 team points.

Cerminara, a freshman, entered the MAC Championships as the top-seeded 197-pound wrestler, having posted a perfect 5-0 record in the MAC regular season. On Sunday, he advanced to the final by winning a 4-1 decision over Eastern Michigan's Travis Kraft. In the final, Cerminara scored a 4-1 decision in defeating Joel Weimer of Ohio.

Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) and Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) both placed third at the Championships. Bentley, who wrestles at 141 pounds, started the afternoon in the consolation bracket. He defeated Kent State's Mark Wentz and Ohio's Jon Spires to move into the true second place match. That's when Jason Mester of Central Michigan decisioned Bentley, 7-1.

Bontempo began the day with a semifinal victory over Ohio's Mark Shrout. He lost in the final to Ben Heizer of Northern Illinois by a 7-3 decision. After that, Bontempo was pinned by Central Michigan's Russ Vanderheyden in the true second place match.

Both Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) at 125 pounds and Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 149 pounds ended their collegiate careers with a fourth place finish at the Championships.
