Bulls Tied for Third After One Day at MAC Championships

Five Bulls Will Be in Sunday's Semifinals

YPSILANTI, MI -- The University at Buffalo wrestling team finds itself tied for third place after Day One of the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships.  Five Bulls have successfully advanced to the semifinals.

Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter), who was the only UB wrestler given a number-one seed, advanced to the semifinals with a 6-5 decision over Northern Illinois’ Terry Martin. Cerminara will face fourth-seeded Travis Kraft of Eastern Michigan on Sunday in the 197-pound semifinals.

At the 165-pound weight class, Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) advanced for Buffalo. He is the Bulls’ lone NCAA qualifier from last season. In the Saturday quarterfinals, Guarino scored a 6-4 decision over Eastern Michigan’s Brett Filmore. Guarino now faces Central Michigan’s second-seeded Kevin Carr in Sunday’s semifinals.

By 13-3 major decision over Ben Rings of Kent State, Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) advanced to the semifinals. The two-seed, Bontempo, will face third-seeded Mark Shrout of Ohio on Sunday.

Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) at 125 pounds and Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 141 pounds both received first round byes. Voorhees takes on Kent State’s top-seeded Jared Opfer, while Jacoutot matches up against number-one seed Jake Percival of Ohio.

Brian Sebaaly (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) at 133 pounds, Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) at 141 pounds, Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) at 157 pounds, Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) at 174 pounds and heavyweight Mike Cooper (Jacksonville, FL/University Christian) each lost their quarterfinal matches and will compete in the consolation bracket on Sunday.

The Mid-American Conference receives 18 bids to the NCAA Championships, meaning eight wild-cards will be selected along with 10 automatic qualifiers following Sunday’s matches.
