Wrestling Completes Day One MAC At Championships

KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo wrestling team is in sixth place after day one of the Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships. Five Bulls, Pat Lloyd (Montgomery, NY/Valley Central), John Cummings (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area), Jimmy Hamel (Natick, MA/Natick) and Jeff Parker (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) remain alive in the championship heading into day two at Kent State. Central Michigan holds the overall lead with 57 points.

Lloyd suffered a first round loss at 157 pounds to Clay Tucker of Ohio by a 3-1 decision, but rebounded in the consolations, defeating Eastern Michigan’s Cory Mancuso by decision, 9-4.

Cummings also opened with a loss, to Northern Illinois’ Bryan Deutsch, 8-2, but he remained alive at 165 pounds with a win in the consolations, defeating Justin Brandel of Eastern Michigan, 4-1.

Moran reached the semifinals at 184 as a result of an opening round victory over Brad Dieckhaus of Northern Illinois by a 7-3 decision. In his semifinal bout, Moran fell to Central Michigan’s Christian Sinnott, the fourth ranked 184-pounder in the country, by an 8-2 score. Moran rebounded in the consolations with a victory over Erik Schuth of Ohio, 5-3.

Hamel won his opening round bout at 197 with Ohio’s Chris Iammarino in overtime, 3-1. Hamel again went to overtime in his semifinal, this time losing to Michael Blackwell of Kent State, 7-5. Hamel responded with a major decision victory in the consolations over Jake Smith of Northern Illinois, 14-5.

Jeff Parker

Parker received a first round bye and was placed directly into the heavyweight semifinals where he fell in overtime, 5-3, to Kent State's Jermail Porter, the tenth-ranked heavyweight in the country. Parker then won his wrestleback match over Tim Samson of Ohio, 3-2.

At 149 pounds, Ryan Needle (Newfane, NY/Newfane) won his opening match at 149 pounds over David Pienaar of Eastern Michigan by decision, 7-3. But he then lost two straight matches, first a semifinal to Brandon Carter of Central Michigan, 6-1, and then a 3-1 decision to Clint Sponseller of Kent State, and was knocked out of the championship.

Dan Bishop (Whitehall, NY/Whitehall), Joe Wilson (Chester, NY/Monroe-Woodbury), Andrew Stella (Tonawanda, NY/Sweet Home) and Mike Ragusa (Foxboro, MA/Foxboro) also competed in the championship, but were eliminated after losing their first two matches.

The MAC Championships will conclude on Saturday with finals and consolation finals scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
