Wrestling Weekly ReleaseWrestlers of the Week Seniors John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) and Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) both recorded victories in their final home matches against Cornell on Tuesday. Eschenfelder rebounded from last week's loss to tally a win by fall (4:46) over Buck McLamb for the victory. Eschenfelder (17-3) is currently ranked first in the Mid-American Conference at heavyweight. Kegel notched a 10-8 decision over Byron Warner. Kegel is now 27-4 on the season and 3-2 in MAC competition.
UB Defeats Cornell Big Red, 21-19 The University at Buffalo wrestling team won its final regular-season dual match Tuesday night, defeating Cornell University, in Alumni Arena. The Bulls won the first five matches, dropping the last five to the Big Red, for a 21-19 victory. The Bulls began the contest with a victory at 197 pounds. Junior Taylor Lehmann (Brighton, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) (2-4) won his contest by Injury Default (6:40). Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) (12-9) was up next for the Bulls. Voorhees notched a win by sudden victory in double overtime, 2-2. Voorhees and Alejandro Alvarez finished the seven minutes of regulation deadlocked at two. After the first overtime produced no points, the match went to a sudden victory situation with Voorhees not allowing Alvarez to escape for the win. Junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) notched the Bulls' final victory, decisioning Tom Waldron, 6-1. Bentley's season record is 29-4, a team high this season. Senior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) lost his match by fall (5:25) ending his 17-match winning streak. States, who last week recorded his 100th career victory with a win over Mark Shrout (Ohio University), is now 25-4 overall and is a perfect 5-0 in MAC competition, one of only five wrestlers to accomplish that feat this season. States is the first UB wrestler to ever record 100 career victories. He is currently ranked first in the MAC at 184 pounds.
Bulls Beat By Bobcats The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped its final Mid-American Conference match this season, falling to Ohio University, 23-9. This was UB's second straight MAC loss, following a Feb. 10 loss to Central Michigan, 19-12. The Bulls began the contest with a victory at 133 pounds. Kegel notched a 12-8 decision over Anthony Carrizales. After an Ohio victory at 141 pounds, UB tallied a win at 149 pounds. Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) recorded a 10-3 decision over Andrew Reichenbach. Jacoutot is now 22-10 this season and finishes with a 2-1 MAC record. The Bobcats rattled off three consecutive wins, opening up a 13-6 lead, which they would never relinquish. States tallied the last UB victory with a 14-9 decision at 184 pounds over Mark Shrout. States recorded his 17th win in a row and is a perfect 5-0 in MAC competition.
In the Future The Bulls finished the regular season 11-6 overall and 3-2 in MAC matches. Up now on the horizon for the Bulls are this weekend's Mid-American Conference Championships, held at Ohio University on Saturday, March 3, and Sunday, March 4. Winners of each weight class along with eight wild-cards receive bids to the NCAA Championships. Last season, UB sent three competitors to the championships for the third consecutive season. States recorded a 2-2 record at the championships last season. He recorded all 3.5 of UB's points and was two wins shy of placing for All-American honors.
