The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped its home finale to Mid-American Conference opponent, Northern Illinois at Alumni Arena by the score of 21-15. In the Bulls' effort, seniors Mickey Moran and Nate Rock captured victories in their final career matches at Alumni Arena. At 133, the Bulls welcomed back Kevin Smith to the lineup. Smith faced the fourth ranked wrestler in the MAC, Tristen DeShazer of the Huskies with Smith capturing an 8-2 decision. The 18th ranked wrestler in the nation at 149, Desi Green, continued to add to his win total with a 9-7 decision over Northern Illinois' Dan Ruettiger. With four takedowns on the day, Green tied the UB single season record at 64. In their final home matches as Bulls, seniors Rock and Moran were victorious over their opponents. Rock wrestled the Huskies' Derrick Yant, walking away with a 4-2 decision. Moran defeated Northern Illinois' Brad Dieckhaus in a 6-3 decision. At 197, Jimmy Hamel attacked the Huskiesâ Scott Penny from start to finish, posting an 11-5 decision over Penny. Bulls Unable to Rebound in Season Finale Against Bearcats 23-12
The University at Buffalo wrestling team were unable to rebound against the Binghamton University Bearcats, losing 23-12. Junior Dan Bishop ended his four-dual match winless streak by defeating the Bearcats' Tyler Malmberg at 125 in an 11-8 decision. At 133, sophomore Kevin Smith wrestled in his second match back after missing three previous matches due to an upper body injury. Smith collected a 3-1 decision over Binghamton's Mike Kleemanm. The 18th ranked wrestler in the nation, Desi Green added to his 18-1 dual meet record by capturing a 9-8 come from behind decision over the Bearcats' Matt Kaylor. In his last dual match of his career, senior Nate Rock finished strong defeating the Bearcats' Anthony Esposito in a 6-2 decision. Desi Green Crowned Single Season Takedown Champ
In two victories on the weekend, Green collected seven takedowns for the crown as the single season takedown champion (67). His weekend victories also put him in fourth place in team history for most dual meet wins in a season (19) and tied for fifth place for most overall wins in a season (37). Next Up: MAC Championships The Bulls will begin to prepare for the MAC Championships on the campus of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI. The MAC Championships will begin on Saturday, March 7 at 1 pm and will continue on Sunday, March 8 at 11 am. The Bulls will look to capture the team championship as well as individual titles along the way. Last year finalists, Hamel and Moran, will look to go deeper in this year's championships by capturing individual titles.
