Weekly ReleaseAthlete of the Week Senior Joe Downey(Norwich, NY/Norwich) went 2-0 and improved to 23-12 on the season this week as he won matches over opponents from Cornell and Syracuse. At Cornell, Downey upset Bob Greenleaf, ranked 18th in the nation at 197 pounds, 5-3. Downey also beat Syracuse's John Soden, 19-4.
18th-Ranked Cornell Tops Buffalo The University at Buffalo's wrestling team traveled to take on No. 18 Cornell (11-4) at Newman Arena on Thursday (2/17). Despite losing 23-13, the Bulls upended three out of the five nationally ranked wrestlers on the Cornell squad. Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) downed No. 15 Rost Aizenburg 11-1, at 184 pounds, Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) beat No. 18 Bob Greenleaf, 5-3, at 197 pounds, and at 125 pounds, Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) defeated No. 18 Aaron Taylor, 7-5. Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) was also victorious for the the Bulls as he earned a 15-10 decision over Sean Doyle at 133 pounds.
Bulls Dominate Syracuse Buffalo hit the road again on Sunday (1/20) to wrestle Syracuse at Manley Fieldhouse. The Bulls easily swept all 10 matches and beat the Orangemen 47-0.
UB Has Best Start Since 1974-75 Season The Bulls 7-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign was the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record. The 1996-97 team was 12-2-2 under head coach Jim Beichner.
UB Regular Season Completed The Bulls closed their dual meet season last week and now gear up for their second appearance in the Mid-American Conference Championships. The Bulls placed third in last year's MAC tournament. Cooper, Partlow, States In Record Book Sophomore Gary Cooper, senior Jake Partlow and junior Josh States are making their marks in the UB record book. Cooper, the MAC co-Freshman of the Year last season, is currently 34-10 this season, tying him for third place all-time for single-season wins. Partlow, meanwhile, has moved into fourth place all-time with 83 career victories ahead of Scott Slade (39-82) who had 81; while States now has 77 wins good for sixth all-time.
Bulls To Host MAC Championships The University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena will be the site of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships on March 4-5. A team champion will be crowned on Sunday, March 5 as well as the announcement of the Coach of the Year, Outstanding Wrestler and Freshman of the Year. Wrestling will start on Saturday, March 4th at 1:00 pm with championship finals scheduled for Sunday, March 5th at 3:00 p.m.
