UB Defeats Cornell, 21-19, Finish Regular Season 11-6

Bulls Win First Five Matches En Route To Victory

BUFFALO, NY - The University at Buffalo wrestling team won its final regular-season dual match Tuesday night, defeating Cornell University, in Alumni Arena. The Bulls won the first five matches, dropping the last five to the Big Red, for a 21-19 victory.

"We wrestled very well today," said Head Coach Jim Beichner. "After their performance against Ohio, they wanted to come out and wrestle a strong match. The coaches are proud of the seniors and of the entire team's performance."

The Bulls began the contest with a victory at 197 pounds. Junior Taylor Lehmann (Brighton, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) (2-4) won his contest by Injury Default (6:40).

Senior John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) rebounded from last week's loss and to tally a win by fall (4:46) over Buck McLamb for the victory. Eschenfelder (17-3) is currently ranked first in the Mid-American Conference at heavyweight.

Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) (12-9) was up next for the Bulls. Voorhees notched a win by sudden victory in double overtime, 2-2. Voorhees and Alejandro Alvarez finished the seven minutes of regulation deadlocked at two. After the first overtime produced no points, the match went to a sudden victory situation with Voorhees not allowing Alvarez to escape and the win.

Senior Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) notched a 10-8 decision over Byron Warner. Kegel is now 27-4 on the season.

Junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) notched the Bulls' final victory, decisioning Tom Waldron, 6-1. Bentley's season record is 29-4, a team high this season.

Senior, Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) lost his match by fall (5:25) ending his 17-match winning streak. States, who last week recorded his 100th career victory with a win over Mark Shrout (Ohio University), is now 25-4 overall and is a perfect 5-0 in MAC competition, one of only five wrestlers to accomplish that feat this season. States is the first UB wrestler to ever record 100 career victories. He is currently ranked first in the MAC at 184 pounds.

The Bulls finish the regular season record 11-6 overall and 3-2 in MAC matches. UB now has 11 days off before competing at the MAC Championships, held at Ohio University on Saturday, March 3, and Sunday, March 4.
