Bulls Take Eight Duals to Overpower Rock, 29-6
BUFFALO, NY - Sophomore Pat Lloyd (Middletown, NY/Valley Central) earned a 9-1 major decision in the first match and the University at Buffalo wrestling team never looked back, winning eight matches as it dominated Slippery Rock University, 29-6, to close out its dual meet season at Alumni Arena on Thursday night. Buffalo (3-10 overall) picked up its second straight win, after a hard-fought 18-16 win against Kent State in the team's Mid-American Conference finale on Friday. Lloyd (149 pounds) picked up two takedowns, a penalty point and a riding time point to post six points in the final stanza to wrap up the win against Jake Zeoli, one of eight "The Rock" freshmen to compete in the meet. Freshman Scott Rendos (Brockway, PA/Brockway) followed Lloyd's performace with a 4-0 decision against Cory Mancuso. It was Rendos' second dual meet win of the year and put his season record at 17-22. At 165 pounds, sophomore Jake Blowers (Johnstown, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) posted a five-point flurry in the final minute of the match to take a 5-4 lead, but lost when Garry Price earned an escape and a riding time point for "The Rock" (7-16 overall).
Freshman Mickey Moran (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler Area) (174 pounds) got UB back on the winning track, posting a 5-3 decision on Zach Brower for his first career dual meet win. Junior Garrett Hicks (Chautauqua, NY/Chautauqua Lake) (184 pounds) followed with a big 3-0 win against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Champion Charlie Pienaar. Hicks improved to 23-16 on the season with the win. Junior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) became the fourth Buffalo grappler to reach 20 wins this season when he posted a 12-4 major decision against Andrew Joseph. Sherrell (197 pounds) improved to 20-15 on the year and 7-6 in dual meets with the win. After Slippery Rock won the heavyweight match, Buffalo closed the match with three straight wins. Sophomore Mark McKnight (McDonald, PA/South Fayette) (125 pounds) scored 11 takedowns to boost him to a 24-10 decision against Chris Clarke. The 20th-ranked grappler in the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Intermat poll finished the regular season 26-12 overall.
Sophomore Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) posted his ninth consecutive win with a 22-7 technical fall against John Marsh. Budd, now 21-14 on the year and 7-6 in dual meets, posted eight takedowns and two near falls in the match. Freshman Dana Gingerich (Spring Grove, PA/DeLone Catholic) closed the match with an 8-2 win against Tony Monroig. Buffalo now has two weeks to prepare for the MAC Championships, which begins on Friday, March 4 at 11 a.m. Buffalo finished fourth at the championships last year, but produced three champions in McKnight, redshirt senior Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) (197 pounds) and current volunteer assistant Ed Pawlak '04 (174 pounds).
