Weekly ReleaseAthlete of the Week Senior Jake Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah) - the top-ranked 157-pound wrestler in the MAC -improved to 23-9 on the season with a pair of wins this week. Partlow scored a win over Slippery Rock's Doug Cielski with a rideout after the two were deadlocked at 4-4 after overtime. In his final dual meet at Alumni Arena, Partlow posted a 12-8 victory over Russell Clark of Central Michigan.
Bulls Hammer Slippery Rock On Road The University at Buffalo's wrestling team traveled to take on Slippery Rock at Morrow Field House on Tuedsay and swept ten matches to blank the hosts, 39-0. The Bulls improved to 10-3 overall on the season.
#19 Chippewas Best Bulls, 26-12 19th-ranked Central Michigan won the first four weight classes - including two overtime matches - and went on to a 26-12 victory over the University at Buffalo on Saturday afternoon in Mid-American Conference wrestling action. The Chippewas (7-4-1, 4-0 in the MAC) won seven of ten bouts in the dual meet, however, the Bulls received an impressive win from sophomore Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) who pinned CMU's Vernon Cannon at 2:17 at 165 pounds for his fifth dual meet fall of the year. Cooper improved to 33-9 on the year. The match was decided in the first four bouts as the Chippewas Phil Baroni opened the match with a rideout overtime victory over UB's Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport). The match was tied 1-1 after regulation and after neither wrestler scored in overtime, Baroni successfully rode States out for :30 to claim the close win. The Chippewas then won the next two matches before UB's Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) fell, 7-5, in overtime to Central's Ahmad Sanders. That gave the Chippewas a 12-0 lead and they never lost control. Buffalo also got victories from junior Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) and senior Jake Partlow, wrestling in his final dual meet at home. Kegel defeated Jordan Webster by a 4-3 score to improve to 26-9 on the season while Partlow claimed an exciting 12-8 decision over Russell Clark to move to 23-9 for the year.
UB Has Best Start Since 1974-75 Season The Bulls 7-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign was the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record. With three regular season matches left, the Bulls (10-4) have a chance to set or tie the school record for Division I dual meet victories. The 1996-97 team was 12-2-2 under head coach Jim Beichner.
UB Set For Busy Week The Bulls will close their dual meet season this week with three tough matches: at Cornell on Thursday and against Syracuse and Wagner on Sunday in Syracuse.
Cooper, Partlow, States In Record Book Sophomore Gary Cooper, senior Jake Partlow and junior Josh States are making their marks in the UB record book. Cooper, the MAC co-Freshman of the Year last season, is currently 33-9 this season, tying him for fourth place all-time for single-season wins. Partlow, meanwhile, has moved into fourth place all-time with 82 career victories ahead of Scott Slade (39-82) who had 81; while States now has 75 wins good for seventh all-time. · The Week Past ·
