Bulls Give #13 Edinboro a Fight

BUFFALO, NY ö The University at Buffalo wrestling team fought hard against #13 Edinboro University on Friday night at Alumni Arena, eventually falling to the Fighting Scots by the score of 31-10. Desi Green, Jimmy Hamel and Nate Rock each picked up victories for the Bulls.

The night's match started at 141 with the Bulls falling behind 4-0. The Bulls pulled within one, picking up a 3-2 victory at 149 by Green over Edinboro's Torsten Gillespie. Following a scoreless first period, Green scored an escape in the second period, the only points awarded in the period. Gillespie scored an escape to open the third period however, Green quickly attacked by taking down Gillespie for a two-point lead. Green was able to hold on for the victory despite Gillespie's scoring of a late escape.

Nate Rock

At 174, Rock opened the match with a quick takedown, his only points in the first period. In the second period, Rock scored six unanswered points in the form of an escape, a takedown and a two-point nearfall, keeping Edinboro's John Foley off the scoresheet while extending his lead to 8-1. Rock scored a takedown in the third while tagging on a riding point for an 11-2 major decision, pulling the Bulls within six points.

Hamel would face a familiar opponent at 197, Edinboro's Pat Bradshaw. Hamel was looking for double the revenge due to a 4-3 loss earlier in the season to Bradshaw at the Reno Tournament of Champions as well as his loss to Bradshaw in last year's dual meet with the Fighting Scots also by a 4-3 decision.

Hamel and Bradshaw went toe-to-toe through the entire match with the score 5-5 at the end of three periods. With eight seconds remaining, Hamel scored a takedown for a 5-4 lead only to give up an escape to Bradshaw with no time remaining on the clock. With three seconds remaining in overtime, Hamel took a shot on Bradshaw taking him down to the mat for the 7-5 decision.

"We faced an experienced, tough team and gave it a fight. Desi, Jimmy and Nate fought hard tonight displaying what we coach these young men to do," said head coach Jim Beichner.

In recognition of his 11-2 major decision, Rock was named the US Army National Guard Gladiator of the Match.

The Bulls will be back in action on Sunday, February 15 against non-conference opponent, #13 Hofstra University with the first match set for 1 pm.
