Wrestler of the Week

Senior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) both tallied victories in each of the Bulls' dual meets this week.

Against Slippery Rock, States picked up a win by fall in 2:23 over John Opfar his eighth win by fall this season. Black won by major decision, 13-4, over Anthony Errera.

Against Central Michigan, both States and Black added wins for the Bulls. Black did not allow Derek Phillips to score in a 6-0 defeat and States won his match with Jeff Pangborn, 3-1.

Bulls Fall to CMU Chippewas, 19-12

The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped a dual match to Central Michigan, 19-12 on Feb. 10 at CMU.

The Chippewas rattled off three wins in a row to start the match before Black picked up the first UB victory. Black (15-9) shut out Derek Phillips, 6-0, for the win at 157 pounds.

Senior Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) added UB's second win with a 6-3 decision over Mitch Hancock. Guarino's season record is 18-12.

States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) picked up the next UB victory when he tallied his 16th win in a row, decisioning Jeff Pangborn, 3-1 at 184 pounds. States' season record is now 24-3.

Senior John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) recorded the last UB victory. Eschenfelder (16-2) defeated Jack Leffler, 7-2 at heavyweight.

Bulls Record 43-3

Victory over Slippery Rock

The University at Buffalo wrestling team picked up its third win in a row Tues. Feb 6, defeating Slippery Rock University, 43-3.

Senior Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) (25-4) started the match off with a technical fall (16-1; 6:54) over Greg McCarty.

Black and senior Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen) both picked up wins by major decision. Black won 13-4 over Anthony Errera while Cooper (6-9) won 11-3 over Adam Shawver.

Seniors Eschenfelder and Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) (11-8) and junior Ryan Bentley

(Ripley, NY/Ripley) (28-4) all picked up wins by forfeit.

Senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) and junior Taylor Lehmann (Brighton, NY/McQuaid Jesuit) both added victories. Jacoutot (21-10) decisioned Erick Eyth, 9-8 for the victory. Lehmann (1-3) decisioned Matt Hildreth, 7-3 for his first victory of the season.

Bulls Pin Bucknell Bison, 37-11

The University at Buffalo wrestling team notched another victory defeating Bucknell, 37-11, Sat. Feb. 3, at Bucknell. UB posted wins in all but three weight classes.

Black and Kegel both picked up wins by fall. Black pinned Mike Saunders in 55 seconds while Kegel pinned Jeremy Weller in 6:35.

States and Eschenfelder both tallied wins. States defeated Brian Neuman, 7-2 and Eschenfelder won his match by Medical Forfeit in the third period.

Jacoutot and Voorhees both picked up wins by forfeit.

Bulls Grapple The Record Books

With his 16 victories this season, Eschenfelder has moved into sole possession of eighth place overall in career wins (76). Eschenfelder is also tied for fourthoverall on the career dual wins list with 37.

Along with the record for most career wins at UB, States is currently second on the career dual meet wins list with 42 behind Bruce Hadsell ('73-78) who has 50.

In the Future

The Bulls season record is 10-5 overall and 3-1 in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls wrap up the MAC regular season at home on Saturday, Feb. 17, against Ohio at 1:00 p.m. in Alumni Arena. UB's final regular season match is on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Arena.
