Wrestling Weekly ReleaseClick here for a PDF version of the release Bulls Shocked by #24 Kent State 31-7 The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped its Mid-American Conference match on Saturday evening at Alumni Arena against the 24th ranked team in the nation, the Kent State Golden Flashes, 31-7.
The most grueling match came at 174 with Nate Rock facing Kent Stateâs Chris Estep. Throughout three periods of action, each wrestler scored one point a piece in the form of an escape. Following the first sudden victory overtime, the match remained tied. In the second sudden victory overtime, Rock scored an escape for a 2-1 lead. Estep answered back with an escape in the third sudden victory overtime. The match would be settled in the third overtime in the form of a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Rock shot into Estep, scoring a takedown for the 4-2 decision. ãOur young men train hard everyday and fight hard in every match. We are young and will continue to learn that every match is a tough fight,ä said head coach Jim Beichner.
Green was named the MAC Wrestler of the Week on February 2. In the Bullsâ dual meet against Central Michigan, the redshirt-freshman captured a one-point victory over the tenth ranked wrestler in the nation at 149, Steve Brown of Central Michigan. Next Up: Edinboro and Hofstra The Bulls will face two opponents at home this weekend. First up, the Bulls will face #12 Edinboro University on Friday, February 13 at 7 pm. The Bulls currently hold a 3-15 all-time record against the Fighting Scots. In last yearâs matchup, the Fighting Scots defeated the Bulls 37-3 while Mickey Moran picked up the Bullsâ lone victory by defeating the 16th ranked wrestler in the nation at 184, Chris Honeycutt, in a 3-1 tiebreaker.
According to the latest Intermat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings, the Fighting Scots (9-2) currently have six wrestlers nationally ranked in the top 20 of their respective weight classes; 125 (#1), 133 (#18), 157 (#1), 165 (#9), 184 (#17) and 285 (#13). On Sunday, February 15, the Bulls will face #23 Hofstra University (8-5) at 1 pm. The Bulls-Pride all-time series is tied at 3-3. The last meeting with the Pride came in the 97-98 season, previous to the Bulls joining the MAC. In the matchup, the Bulls captured a 31-11 victory. The Pride are currently coached by Amherst, NY native, Tom Shifflet. The Pride currently have four wrestlers nationally ranked in the latest Intermat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings at their respective weight classes; 125 (#20), 133 (#8), 157 (#16) and 174 (#10).
