Weekly ReleaseAthlete of the Week Junior Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) improved his record to 24-9 and set the tone in Buffalo's dominating 38-3 win over Bucknell on Saturday. Kegel scored a 20-4 technical fall victory over Tom Doerr at 133 pounds. He continues to lead the team in three-point near falls with five.
Bulls Blast Bucknell To Move to 9-3 The University at Buffalo continued their perfection at Alumni Arena on Saturday by posting a dominating 38-3 victory over visiting Bucknell University. The Bulls dropped just one bout in improving to 9-3 overall and a perfect 6-0 at home this season. Bucknell dropped to 4-6 on the season with the loss, with heavyweight Brian Falciglia posting the only win of the day for the Bison. Buffalo was led by sophomore Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) who improved his record to 31-9 on the season with the day's only fall in 3:21 over Jason Von Volkenburg. Other outstanding efforts were turned in by 133-pounder Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur), 149-pounder Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley), freshman 197-pounder Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) and senior 157-pounder Jake Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah). Kegel improved to 24-9 on the season with a technical fall (20-4) win over Tommy Doerr and Bentley posted a 14-5 win over Adam Webb to improve to 23-13 on the season. Downey, meanwhile, defeated Carl Perrone, 15-5, to improve to 20-11 on the season and Partlow hung a 14-4 defeat on Ryan Fasnacht to improve to 21-9 on the season.
UB Has Best Start Since 1974-75 Season The Bulls 7-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign was the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record. With five regular season matches left, the Bulls have a chance to set a school record for Division I dual meet victories. The 1996-97 team was 12-2-2 under head coach Jim Beichner.
UB Set For Busy Week The Bulls will head to Slippery Rock on Tuesday for a dual meet before returning home on Saturday to close the Mid-American Conference portion of their schedule against defending MAC champion Central Michigan. The match against the Chippewas of Central Michigan will be the final home match of the season with the Bulls looking to go a perfect 7-0 at Alumni Arena this year. Buffalo has won nine of their last ten matches at "The Big A."
Cooper, Partlow, States In Record Book Sophomore Gary Cooper, senior Jake Partlow and junior Josh States are making their marks in the UB record book. Cooper, the MAC co-Freshman of the Year last season, is currently 31-9 this season, tying him for eighth-place all-time for single-season wins. Partlow, meanwhile, has moved into fifth place all-time with 80 career victories ahead of Tom Jobin's 79; while States now has 74 wins, tying him with Brian Schaal for seventh all-time.
Bulls To Host MAC Championships The University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena will be the site of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships on March 4-5. A team champion will be crowned on Sunday, March 5 as well as the announcement of the Coach of the Year, Outstanding Wrestler and Freshman of the Year. · The Week Past ·
