Wrestling Weekly ReleaseWrestler of the Week Junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) picked up a 16-2 win by technical fall, over Andy Bernstien during UB's 37-11 win over Bucknell. He has won his last eight matches in a row. Bentley upped his record to 28-3, a team-high which includes first-place finishes at the Bloomsburg Invitational, the Wilkes Open and the New York State Collegiate Championships. Bulls Pin Bucknell Bison, 37-11 The University at Buffalo wrestling team notched another victory Saturday, defeating Bucknell, 37-11 at Bucknell. UB posted wins in all but three weight classes. Freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) and senior Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) both picked up wins by fall. Black (16-9) pinned Mike Saunders in 55 seconds while Kegel (24-3) pinned Jeremy Weller in 6:35. Seniors Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) both tallied wins. States (22-3) defeated Brian Neuman, 7-2 and Eschenfelder (14-2) won his match by Medical Forfeit in the third period. Seniors Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) (20-10) and Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) both picked up wins by forfeit.
Voorhees Named MAC Wrestler of the Week Voorhees (11-7) was selected as last week's Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week, after an 8-6 decision over Kent State's Brent Thompson. Thompson, the three-time defending MAC Champion, is ranked first at 125-pounds in the MAC. Voorhees finished fourth at the New York State Collegiate Championships earlier this season. Bulls Beat Kent State Golden Flashes, 21-10 The University at Buffalo wrestling team picked up a big MAC victory defeating Kent State, 21-10 at Alumni Arena. UB notched wins in all but three weight classes. Voorhees and States both recorded important victories against Kent State. With his victory at 184 pounds, States became the University at Buffalo's all-time career wins leader. States is ranked 12th in the nation at 184 pounds. States' career record at UB is 97-48. At 125 pounds, senior Voorhees decisioned Brent Thompson, 8-6. Jacoutot notched a win at 149 pounds while Black won 11-5 by decision. Eschenfelder notched a 5-2 decision at Heavyweight. Eschenfelder is ranked 11th in the nation. Kegel returned from injury and won his match, 4-1, while Bentley added an 8-3 decision. Kegel is ranked 16th in the nation at 133 pounds. Bulls Grapple The Record Books With his 14 victories this season, Eschenfelder has moved into eighth place overall in career wins (74), where he is tied with Brian Schall ('96-99). Eschenfelder is also tied for 11th overall with Pete Rao ('81-85) on the career dual wins list with 34. Along with the record for most career wins at UB, States is currently second on the career dual meet win list with 40 behind Bruce Hadsell ('73-78) who has 50. In the Future The Bulls season record is 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the Mid-American Conference after recording early dual-meet wins against Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and most recently Kent State. UB's next competition is Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Alumni Arena at 7:30 p.m. for a dual meet against Slippery Rock. The Bulls then hit the road for a dual meet on
Saturday, Feb. 10, against MAC-rival Central Michigan.
