UB Grapplers Narrowly Fall To Ohio

17-16 loss to Bobcats came down to overtime period in final match

BUFFALO, NY - Buffalo's wrestling team suffered a nail-biting 17-16 loss to the visiting Ohio Bobcats on Sunday afternoon. After trailing the entire day, UB took a 16-14 lead into the final match only to lose in overtime and wind up on the losing end. The defeat dropped UB to 10-3 overall and to 1-1 in Mid-American Conference matches.

In the afternoon's final match, Ohio heavyweight Jeremiah Beltran posted a 6-4 overtime victory over UB junior Greg Thomas (Baldwin, NY/Uniondale). Tied at four after seven minutes of regulation wrestling, Beltran earned a takedown 30 seconds into the sudden-death overtime session to secure a Bobcats' win.

UB lost its first two matches on the day - one by fall - and trailed 9-0. Buffalo 141-pound senior Mike Trotta (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) then got UB on the board with a 9-6 win over Jon Spires. The Bobcats took the next match however, expanding their lead to 12-3.

Sophomore Brian Sebaaly (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) - who previously wrestled at only 133 and 141 pounds this season - then won the 157-pound match with a 3-1 overtime victory over Brandon Shriner. Sebaaly scored a two-point near fall as time expired in the third and final overtime period.

Ohio won the next match, regaining a nine-point lead at 15-6. Senior Ed Pawlak (Lakewood, NY/Southwestern) posted a 9-1 major decision win over John Konyesni at 174 pounds, reducing the Bobcats' lead to 15-10. In the 184-pound bout, sophomore Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) earned a 4-2 win over Travis Smith. Following a team point deduction for unsportsmanlike conduct on Ohio, the Bobcats led by only one point.

Junior Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) then scored a 4-3 decision over Joel Weimer, giving UB its first lead of the afternoon at 16-14. The Bobcats then took the heavyweight match though, narrowly escaping with the victory.

Buffalo returns to action next week with another MAC home match. The nationally-ranked Central Michigan Chippewas will visit Alumni Arena at 7 pm on Saturday.
