Voorhees Named MAC Wrestler of the Week

Bulls' Senior Upset Top Seed at 125 Pounds

BUFFALO, NY - Senior Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) was named the Mid-American Conference Wrestler of the Week as announced by the conference office. On Saturday, Voorhees defeated Brent Thompson of Kent State, 8-6, to help the Bulls to a a 21-10 victory. In his two previous meetings with Thompson, Voorhees was 0-2. Thompson is the top seed at 125 pounds in the MAC, while Voorhees is ranked third. Thompson is also the three-time defending MAC Champion.

"Charlie injured his shoulder early on, and so the beginning of the season was a struggle for him," said head coach Jim Beichner. "This win is a great sign that he is wrestling well again. It is a great confidence booster for him it shows him that he can win the MAC and that he belongs out there with the big guys."

Voorhees has a 10-7 season record while going 1-0 in MAC competition. He finished fourth at the New York State Collegiate Championships earlier this season.

This is the second time this season that a UB wrestler has been named MAC Wrestler of the Week. Senior Shawn Kegel (Wantagh, NY/MacArthur) won the honor for the week of December 4. Kegel finished third in the 133-pound bracket at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational with a 6-1 record. His third-place finish was the highest ever by a UB wrestler at the Invitational. Also, Kegel cracked the national rankings in the 133-pound weight class and is currently ranked 16th. Kegel also placed first at the Bearcat Open and the Bloomsburg Invitational and currently has a 23-3 season record.

UB's record is 8-4 and 3-0 in the MAC after recording dual-meet wins against Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and most recently Kent State. The Bulls' next dual meet is Saturday, Feb. 3 at Bucknell. UB's next home dual meet is on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. against Slippery Rock.
