Gary Cooper Named Athlete of Week

Athlete of the Week

Sophomore Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) won a pair of matches in the Bulls' double dual with Kent State and Marquette on Friday, Jan. 28th at Kent, OH.

Cooper defeated Kent's Rick Nemeth by a 12-7 score in his first match and then pinned Marquette's Jake Harreld at :57 as the Bulls beat Marquette, 31-12.

Bulls Split Double Dual at Kent

The Bulls saw their overall dual meet record move to 8-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference after splitting a pair of matches at Kent, OH.

The Bulls dropped a 21-9 decision to powerful Kent in the first match as the Golden Flashes improved to 9-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the MAC.

Buffalo got wins from 157-pounder Jake Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah), Gary Cooper at 165 pounds and freshman Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) at 197 pounds. Partlow won 7-6, Cooper posted a 12-7 win while Downey won, 7-1.

Buffalo rebounded with a 31-12 win over Marquette as Buffalo had seven victors. Winners for the Bulls were Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) at 133 pounds, Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 141 pounds, Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) at 149 pounds, Gary Cooper at 165 pounds, Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen) via fall at 174 pounds, Josh States at 184 pounds, while Joe Downey picked up a forfeit win at 197 pounds.

UB Has Best Start Since 1974-75 Season

The Bulls 7-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign was the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record.

UB To Host Bucknell This Weekend

The Bulls return to the friendly confines of Alumni

Arena -where they are 5-0 this season -when they host Bucknell University on Saturday, Feb. 5th at 1:00 p.m.

The Bulls have won eight of their last nine matches at Alumni Arena.

UB To See More Tough Competition

The Bulls loss to 8th-ranked Edinboro on Jan. 16th is just the beginning of national caliber competition the team will face.

UB still has 19th-ranked Central Michigan on Feb. 12th at Alumni Arena and will travel to 14th-ranked Cornell on Feb. 17th. All rankings are based on this week's Intermat Top 25.

Bulls To Host MAC Championships

The University at Buffalo's Alumni Arena will be the site of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Wrestling Championships on March 4-5.

A team champion will be crowned on Sunday, March 5 as well as the announcement of the Coach of the Year, Outstanding Wrestler and Freshman of the Year. Wrestling will start on Saturday, March 4th at 1:00 pm with championship finals scheduled for Sunday, March 5th at 3:00 pm For tickets or more information regarding this event call the UB Ticket Office at 716-645-6666.
