Wrestling Weekly ReleaseWrestlers of the Week Seniors Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) and Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) both picked up big wins during UB's win over Kent State, 21-10. With his victory at 184 pounds over Kent State's Nick Magistrelli, States became the University at Buffalo's all-time career wins leader. States is ranked 12th in the nation at 184 pounds and has a 21-3 season record and a 3-0 Mid-American Conference record. States' career record at UB is 96-48. At 125 pounds, senior Voorhees decisioned Brent Thompson, 8-6. Thompson, three-time defending MAC Champion, had won the two previous meetings and was ranked first in the MAC poll at 125 pounds and was named Honorable Mention in the Intermat Division I Rankings.
Bulls Beat Golden Flashes, 21-10 The University at Buffalo wrestling team picked up a big MAC victory defeating Kent State, 21-10 at Alumni Arena. UB notched wins in all but three weight classes. Senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) notched a win at 149 pounds decisioning Nick Brenner 11-4 while freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) won 11-5 by decision over Mark Lensman. After States' victory at 184 pounds, the Bulls were ahead 9-7, and would keep the lead for good after senior John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) notched a 5-2 decision at Heavyweight. Eschenfelder is ranked 11th in the nation. Senior Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur) returned from injury and decisioned Ryan Simmons, 4-1, and junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) added to his team-leading 26-3 record with an 8-3 decision over Mark Wentz. Kegel is ranked 16th in the nation at 133 pounds.
Bulls Finish Third At NYS Championships The University at Buffalo wrestling team finished third out of 21 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championships held at Nassau Community College, Jan. 19-20. The Bulls finished with 134 points, behind Army (172.5 points) and Cornell (167 points). Seniors States (184) and Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) (165) and Bentley (141) finished first in their respective weight classes. Seven out of the eight UB wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight classes. UB had more wrestlers place first than any other team. Jacoutot (149) and freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) (157) both finished third in their brackets. Voorhees finished fourth in the 125-pound weight class while Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen HS) finished fifth at 174 pounds.
Downey Leaves UB Wrestling Program Sophomore Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) has chosen to leave the team due to a series of injuries, announced head coach Jim Beichner. "Joe was mentally and physically unable to compete as a result of these injuries," said Beichner. Downey had a 6-7 record this season, including a second-place finish at the Bloomsburg Invitational.
Bulls Grapple The Record Books With his 13 victories this season, Eschenfelder has moved into ninth place overall in career wins (73), where he is tied with Jeromy McVige ('95-98) and Steve Irving ('85-89). Eschenfelder is also tied for 11th overall with Pete Rao (81-85)on the career dual wins list with 34. Along with the record for most career wins at UB, States is currently second on the career dual meet win list with 39.
In the Future The Bulls season record is 8-4 overall and 3-0 in
the MAC after recording early dual-meet wins. UB's
next competition is a dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 3 at Bucknell.
The Bulls then return home on Tuesday Feb. 6, in
Alumni Arena for a dual meet at 7:30 p.m. against Slippery Rock. |
