UB Grapplers Fall to 12th-Ranked Mountaineers

Charlie Voorhees and Brian Sebaaly Score Victories for Buffalo

MORGANTOWN, WV - The Bulls lost to 12th-ranked West Virginia on Saturday by a 26-6 score. UB wrestlers registering wins were Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY) and Brian Sebaaly (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster). Buffalo's dual meet mark falls to 3-6.

The meet started at 165 pounds, where West Virginia's Tom McMath - ranked sixth in the country - major decisioned Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore), 18-7.

That was followed up by third-ranked Greg Jones of the Mountaineers winning an 11-5 decision over Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) at 174 pounds.

West Virginia expanded its lead to 9-0 when Ryan Wilman won in overtime over Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area). The 184-pound Bontempo scored a late takedown to force overtime, but eventually lost 5-3.

The Mountaineers kept their momentum as Brent Miller at 197 pounds decisioned Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter), 8-4. At the heavyweight class, Ryan Kehler of West Virginia scored an 8-2 decision over Mike Cooper (Jacksonville, FL/University Christian).

It was then Voorhees at 125 pounds who put the first team points on the board for the Bulls. He beat the Mountaineers' Nathan Kendjorsky, 8-3. Sebaaly followed that effort up with a 10-4 decision over West Virginia's Greg White at 133 pounds.

The Mountaineers took the final three matches. Seventeenth-ranked Shane Cunanan won a 12-2 major decision over Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) at 141 pounds. Billy Smith - ranked 20th nationally at 149 pounds - decisioned Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport), 6-2. Then at 157 pounds, ninth-ranked Joe Carr won a 14-9 decision over Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall).

The Bulls return to the friendly confines of Alumni Arena next Saturday for a 1 p.m. dual meet versus Bucknell.
