Bulls Drop Close Match to Ohio, 19-15

Bishop, Green, Hamel and Smith collect victories

ATHENS, OH – The University at Buffalo wrestling team suffered its first loss of the season in MAC action to the Ohio Bobcats by the score of 19-15. The Bulls received wins from junior Dan Bishop, sophomore Kevin Smith, redshirt-freshman Desi Green and sophomore Jimmy Hamel.

The Bulls (9-5, 1-1 MAC) jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead. At 125, Bishop opened the matchup by pinning Tim Silvers at 3:05. At 133, Smith captured a 7-3 decision over Quentin Keyes, who earlier this season eliminated Smith from the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, NV.

The Bulls next victory came at 149 as Green defeated Seth Morton by decision, 9-6. With this victory, Green collected his 29th overall win as well as his 13th dual meet win of the season, leading the team in both categories. Green is now one win from etching his name next to Bulls’ wrestling greats in the record books for most dual wins in a season and three wins from adding his name to the most overall wins category.

The Bobcats (7-5-1, 2-0 MAC) won the next four matches, building a 16-12 lead with two matches remaining. The Bulls won the 197-lb bout with Hamel picking up a close 2-1 victory over Christopher Iammarino, pulling the Bulls within one, 16-15.

The Bulls chance for a victory came down to the 285-lb matchup between freshman Brett Correll and Ohio’s Justin Powell. Correll fought hard against Powell however, Powell would come out with a 6-4 decision.

The Bulls will face the sixth ranked team in the nation, Central Michigan on Saturday, January 31 with the action beginning at 2 pm.
