UB Wrestlers Drop MAC Dual Meet to Kent StateKENT, OH The University at Buffalo wrestling team lost a Mid-American Conference dual meet at Kent State on Friday night by a 28-9 score. The three Bulls' victories were posted by Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson), Garrett Bontempo (DuBois, PA/DuBois Area) and Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter). The meet at the Memorial and Athletic Convocation Center began with the 157-pound weight class. Mike Tolar of Kent State won by an 11-3 major decision over Dave Edwards (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall). The UB freshman registered three escapes to earn his points. At 165 pounds, Kent State's Nick Nemeth decisioned Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore), 6-4. Nemeth used a late escape and a riding time point to earn the win in a rematch of last year's MAC Championship at the same weight class. Buffalo's first win was picked up by Cooper at 174 pounds, who earned a decisive 14-9 victory over the Golden Flashes' Ken Clark. Cooper had three escapes, one two-point near fall, one riding time point and four takedowns in the match. That was followed up by Bontempo's 10-4 decision over Ben Rings of Kent State. Bontempo, wrestling at 184 pounds, used one reversal and four takedowns to pick up the win.
At 197 pounds, Cerminara decisioned Kent State's Zeb Miller, 10-4. The Bulls' freshman recorded one escape, one riding time point and four takedowns in the match. That gave UB the 9-7 edge in team score, but the Bulls would not win another match during the remainder of the meet. Golden Flashes' heavyweight Jim Swetter pinned Mike Cooper (Jacksonville, FL/University Christian) at 4:05. Then at 125 pounds, Jared Opfer of Kent State won by fall over Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) at 3:20. At 133 pounds, Brian Sebaaly (Lancaster, NY/Lancaster) dropped a 6-3 decision to Kent State's Kevin Linich. All three of Sebaaly's points came from escapes. Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) lost his match at 141 pounds to Mark Wentz of the Golden Flashes by a 10-5 decision. Bentley tallied three escapes and one takedown in the match. The final match saw Kent State's Ryan Simmons win a 7-5 decision over Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 149 pounds. Jacoutot's points came from an escape, a reversal and a takedown. Buffalo now heads to Morgantown for a 5:00 p.m. Saturday dual meet with the
West Virginia Mountaineers of the Eastern Wrestling League. |
