Bulls Crack WrestlingReport.com Top 30
Three wrestlers lead the way with individual rankings, as senior Kyle Cerminara (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) is second at 197 pounds, junior Mark Budd (Orrville, OH/Orrville) is 11th at 133 pounds and senior Harold Sherrell (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) is 21st at heavyweight. Cerminara, the only Division I wrestler still undefeated at 197 pounds, is 30-0 this season and has set school records for longest winning streak, most dual meet takedowns and career wins this season. He has also become the school's first wrestler to win the Las Vegas Invitational and he wrapped up his second New York State Collegiate Championship this weekend, winning three matches by major decision and one by technical fall. Budd, who is a dazzling 28-3 this season, entered the national scene on Dec. 9, when he defeated national runner-up Shawn Bunch of Edinboro, 6-4, in overtime. Budd's momentum had been rolling for a long time before that, however, as the former Ohio State runner-up has won 38 of his last 43 matches (.884). He has won four tournament titles this year, including the Mat Town USA Invitational and the New York State Championships. Sherrell, who is also a remarkable 27-5, has entered the national scene thanks to wins against nationally-ranked wrestlers, Joe Sapp of Northern Illinois and Tyler Shovlin of UNC-Greensboro. Sherrell, who wrestled behind Cerminara for two years before earning a permanent spot in the lineup, entered the top 15 in career wins with his 73rd win in the semifinals of the New York State Championships. The recognition ends a month of near-misses for the Bulls (5-3 overall, 0-1 Mid-American Conference), which began with a 22-21 loss to USA Today/NWCA's 22nd-ranked Northern Illinois on Jan. 6 and continued with a 22-20 loss to UNC-Greensboro, a team that has held a national ranking this year, on Jan. 15. The Bulls claimed a tournament-high three titles this weekend at the New York State Championships, despite narrowly dropping the championship to Army by 14.5 points.
Buffalo will host its second Alumni Arena quad-meet Saturday at 9:00 am, featuring Mid-American Conference foe Ohio, Delaware State and Division III's Ithaca. |
