Weekly releaseAthlete of the Week Junior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) defeated No.1-seeded Rob Ansdach in the 184-pound finals of the New York State Collegiates to capture the tournament title and help the Bulls to a second place finish with 144 points.
Bulls Finish Second At NYS Collegiates The Bulls placed second in the New York State Collegiates over the weekend, continuing their strong showings in tournaments this season. Buffalo had nine of its 10 wrestlers place in the top seven and six finish in the top four of their weight classes to finish with 144 points behind only Hofstra (173), while narrowly edging out Army (143.5) for second. Individual champions for the Bulls were junior Josh States at 184 pounds and senior Mike Garofalo (Sharpsville, PA/Kennedy Christian) at heavyweight. States was outstanding throughout, posting three straight wins by fall before knocking off top-seeded Rob Ansdach of Hofstra in the finals. Garofalo, meanwhile, won by fall once and earned the finals with a 5-3 win over Oswego's Jason Turner before earning a medical forfeit win over Army's Eric Gust. Also reaching the finals for the Bulls was 133-pound junior Shawn Kegel (Wantaugh, NY/MacArthur). Kegel was defeated by Hofstra's top-seeded Roman Fleszair by a narrow 6-5 decision in the finals.
Cooper, Partlow Earn Third Place The Bulls had a pair of wrestlers -Jake Partlow (Kennonsburg, OH/Shenandoah) and Gary Cooper (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) -come through the consolation brackets to earn third place finishes Partlow posted a 7-2 decision over Cornell's Andy Tieben in the 157-pound bracket, while Cooper edged Niagara County Community College's Rashad Evans by a 3-2 score to claim third at 165 pounds. Another UB wrestler, true freshman Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) placed fourth after being defeated 9-1 by Cornell's Cory Anderson.
UB Has Best Start Since 1974-75 Season The Bulls 7-0 start to the 1999-2000 campaign was the program's best since the 1974-75 season when the Bulls started off 8-0 under Coach Ed Michael and finished the year with a 14-3-1 record.
UB To Battle MAC Foe Kent This Week The Bulls will hit the road again this weekend when they travel to Kent, OH to battle the Golden Flashes in a Mid-American Conference dual as well as Marquette University in a non-league match. The Bulls are currently 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference and still must face league favorite Central Michigan on Feb. 12th at Alumni Arena.
UB To See More Tough Competition The Bulls loss to 8th-ranked Edinboro on Jan. 16th is just the beginning of national caliber competition the team will face. UB still has 19th-ranked Central Michigan on Feb. 12th at Alumni Arena and will travel to 14th-ranked Cornell on Feb. 17th. All rankings are based on this week's Intermat Top 25.
