Kevin Smith Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week UB wrestler wins award following success at NYS Collegiate Championships
Smith, an exercise science major with a 3.57 grade point average, won the 133-pound weight title as he helped the Bulls capture the team crown at the New York State Collegiate Championships. Wrestling in Oswego, just a few miles from his hometown of Mexico, top-seeded Smith posted a 6-1 decision over Army’s Whit Dunning, the second seed, for the title and enough points to give UB the six-point difference over the Black Knights in the team standings. Smith swept through the 133-pound bracket with four wins, including a pin in the second round. Smith is 26-5 overall this season and holds an 11-1 mark in dual-meet bouts this season. The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
