Wrestler of the Week

Senior David Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) was 5-0 and finished first at 165 pounds at the New York State Collegiate Championships. The win was Guarino's first career tournament championship. Earlier this season, Guarino finished third at the Bloomsburg Invitational. Guarino has a 17-9 overall record and is 6-4 in dual meet competition.

Guarino began the NYS Championships seeded fourth. He won his first match against John Leone of Wagner by Technical Fall 15-0; 5:14. In his next match against Karl Hall from SUNY Morrisville, Guarino once again claimed victory by a Technical Fall 22-7; 6:10. Guarino won the rest of his matches by three points, 7-4 in the quarterfinals, 5-2 in the semifinals and 4-1 over third-seed Roberto Padilla from Brockport in the finals.

Bulls Finish Third At NYS Championships

The University at Buffalo wrestling team finished third out of 21 teams at the New York State Collegiate Championships held at Nassau Community College, Jan. 19-20. The Bulls finished with 134 points, behind Army (172.5 points) and Cornell (167 points).

Seniors Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) (184) and Dave Guarino (Derby, NY/Lakeshore) (165) and junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) (141) finished first in their respective weight classes. Seven out of the eight UB wrestlers placed in the top five of their weight classes. UB had more wrestlers place first than any other team.

Senior Bill Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) (149) and freshman Labe Black (Ventnor, NJ/Absegami) (157) both finished third in their brackets. Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) finished fourth in the 125-pound weight class while Ben Cooper (Copenhagen, NY/Copenhagen HS) finished fifth at 174 pounds.

Bulls Drop Pair At Virginia Duals

The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped to 7-4 overall on the season with a pair of losses on the first day of the Virginia Duals hosted by the University of Virginia.

The Bulls dropped a 26-9 decision to the University of Pennsylvania, ranked #23 by the National Wrestling Coaches Association this week and as high as #16 by The Wrestling Mall, in the day's first match.

The lone winners for Buffalo were Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley), Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and John Eschenfelder (N. Syracuse, NY/Cicero, N. Syracuse).

In the second match of the day, the Bulls lost narrowly to West Virginia by a 19-16 score. Once again, Bentley, States and Eschenfelder posted impressive wins and were joined in the winners circle by Charlie Voorhees (Warsaw, NY/Warsaw) at 125 pounds and Billy Jacoutot (Spencerport, NY/Spencerport) at 149 pounds.

Bentley, States on Hot Streaks

Senior Josh States (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and junior Ryan Bentley (Ripley, NY/Ripley) have both had their share of winning in the past month. States has won his last 12 matches in a row, with his last loss dating back to Dec. 9 against Anthony Reynolds from Sacred Heart in the first match at the Binghamton Duals.

States now has 93 career wins, which places him second behind all-time UB win leader John Stutzman (95). Over the last month, Bentley has compiled a 17-1 record, with the one loss coming at the Buckeye Duals against host, Ohio State.

Downey Leaves UB Wrestling Program

Sophomore Joe Downey (Norwich, NY/Norwich) has chosen to leave the team due to a series of injuries, announced head coach Jim Beichner.

"Joe was mentally and physically unable to compete as a result of these injuries," said Beichner.

Downey had a 6-7 record this season, including a second-place finish at the Bloomsburg Invitational.

"I have always believed that this team responds to adversity, and last weekend is a good sign that there is a lot of fight left in this team."
